Swipe Out Hunger at UC Berkeley was founded in the Fall of 2016 by Halle Redfearn, Nathan Sumekh, Mackenzie Monroe, and Lucinda Laurence. The team works closely with the UC Berkeley Food Pantry, Cal Dining, and Associated Students to allow students who have extra meal points to donate them to support the "Donate a Grocery Bag Program." At the end of each semester the collective meal points donated to the program are converted into a monetary value for the UC Berkeley Food Pantry to use to stock up on fresh produce, meat, and healthy non-perishables for those in need within the UC Berkeley community.
During the 2016-2017 school year the program accumulated 51,000 donated meal points, thereby providing the UCB pantry with $51,000 to support food insecure students!
The Swipes team aims to grow it's presence on campus to encourage students to donate their meal points to support the Grocery Bag program.
