UNC Charlotte's meal share program began July 2018. Students who are facing food insecurity can apply for meal assistance through the Student Assistance and Support Services Office, where eligibility is determined on a case-by-case basis.
The first student donation drive began on October 16th, World Food Day and continued in November of 2018 during Hunger and Homelessness Awareness week. Students can donate up to two swipes from their meal plan per semester. Swipes are then donated outside of Crown Commons and SoVi Dining Hall. Donated meal swipes for the spring semester will occur during National Volunteer Week, which is scheduled for April 8th-12th and April 15th-19th.
The effort, spearheaded by Sean Langley, Assistant Director for Leadership and Community Engagement and Tyler Sytsma, University Sustainability Coordinator, is in partnership with Chartwells Dining Service, Business Services Office, and Student Assistance and Support Services. The Sustainability Office provided initial funding from their student green fund to make this launch possible.
