Welcome Waves!

About the program

At the end of each spring and fall semester, students can donate meal points at a table drive in the Waves Cafe. These donations are used to support families facing food insecurity in the community and meal points distributed by the Student Care Team for students facing food insecurity on campus. In addition to hosting the Swipe Drive, the Pepperdine Swipe Out Hunger team hosts a number of events to raise awareness on food insecurity, like “Sandwiches for Smiles” and National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week.

In 2018, the Swipe Out Hunger team at Pepperdine University raised over $5,000 from meal point donations.

Program Roots

Swipe Out Hunger was established as a Pepperdine University student organization to help alleviate the food insecurity of the greater Los Angeles area and raise awareness of hunger and homelessness in the community. The program not only to feeds community members experiencing homelessness, but also educates students about homelessness and hunger in Los Angeles and what they can do to help. Starting in 2017, the program also developed a partnership with Dining and the Dean's Office to provide meal cards to students who are food insecure on campus.
