California State University – Monterey Bay
Welcome Otters!

About the program

In November during Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week as well as in April during Earth Week, CSU Monterey Bay hosts a weeklong “Feed Each Otter” drive, where students can stop by the dining commons to donate up to two swipes per day throughout the drive. Donated meals are then converted into meal vouchers for students who are facing food insecurity.

Are you a student experiencing food insecurity on campus? Contact the Care Team to learn about basic needs resources such as meal vouchers and the Otter Eats program, which alerts CSU Monterey Bay students of free food opportunities on campus. The CSU Monterey Bay Basic Needs page has additional information regarding student resources and our Campus Resources section below has information regarding the Campus Food Pantry.

Program Roots

The first Swipe Out Hunger drive took place in November of 2016 during the annual Harvest Turkey Dinner, where 100 block meals were donated! Starting in the fall 2017 drive, Dining partnered with the Dean of Students Office case managers to distribute meal vouchers to students they work with. The program is currently being led by Joanna Snawder-Manzo, Care Manager in the Dean of Students Office.
