Swipe Out Hunger was established as a Pepperdine University student organization in 2014 by Zach Nelson in order to help alleviate the food insecurity of the greater Los Angeles area and raise awareness of hunger and homeless in our community. Pepperdine's Swipes Fall 2016 Drive donated over a thousand pounds of food to the local Conejo Valley Food Bank.
Swipes' as we call ourselves for short, hopes not only to feed the homeless, but also to educate the students on campus about the homelessness and hunger problem in Los Angeles, and what they can do to help. Learn more about how you can get involved below!
We aim to tackle hunger and homelessness in our community through a number of outreach programs. Through student activism we are able to best help our community by educating them on the problem of food insecurity and alleviating it through student meal points donations.
How Swipes at Pepperdine Works
At the end of the spring semester, Pepperdine students (and faculty!) can donate their unused meal swipes to our organization. We then repurpose what would have gone to waste into food items for the food scarce families of Los Angeles . Last year we raised over $5,000 from Pepperdine meal point donations. In addition to our Swipe drive each year, we host a number of events to raise awareness on food insecurity like "Sandwiches for Smiles" and help coordinate Pepperdine's yearly National Hunger and Homelessness Week.
Swipe Out Hunger at Pepperdine's next Swipe drive is April 10-14, 2017.
We will recruit for 2017-2018 Swipes Leadership in the Spring of 2017.
The Pepperdine Swipe Out Hunger chapter is always looking for motivated Waves to help us out. Reach out to email@example.com to get involved on our next events!
