University of Memphis launched the Tigers Fight Hunger meal share program in the spring of 2018 with a mission of alleviating student food insecurity and lowering the stigma related to accessing nutrition services. The program operates through a strong collaboration between Student Accountability Outreach and Support, Student Leadership and Involvement, Aramark Dining, the Campus Card Office, and the Student Government Association.
During the two week meal donation drive each semester, students can stop by tables across campus or submit an online form to donate unused guest meals to fund meal cards for students facing food insecurity.
During the first meal donation drive in the spring of 2018 this program served 760 meals to 71 students thanks to a generous match from Aramark Dining. During the fall 2018 drive students donated a total of 366 guest meals.
Starting in late September students who are facing food insecurity can request meal cards by filling out an online application followed by having a meeting with the Student Accountability, Outreach, and Support team to learn about other supportive services such as Tiger Pantry.
